Once upon a time, a 37-year-old businessman had a daring idea. He wanted to follow in the footsteps of Captain James Cook, a famous explorer, who had sailed around the world 200 years ago. To make this dream a reality, he brought along his family: his wife Marry, their 6-year-old son Jonathan, and their 7-year-old daughter Suzzane.

They weren't alone on this adventure. Two experienced sailors, Larry from America and Herb from Switzerland, joined them to help navigate the rough waters of the Indian Ocean. The businessman and his wife wanted to become better sailors, so they could achieve their dream of sailing around the world. Their ship, the Wavewater, was strong and had weathered the toughest storms.

Their journey was planned to last three years and cover an incredible distance of 105,000 kilometers. But as they set out from Cape Town, they encountered strong winds that persisted for weeks. Despite the challenging weather, they celebrated Christmas on their ship, hoping for better days in the New Year. However, on January 2nd, things took a turn for the worse.

Gigantic waves surrounded their ship, causing damage and chaos. The businessman was injured, and water flooded their vessel. In the midst of this crisis, they practiced using life rafts, wore life jackets, and secured everything on deck. Then, the wind suddenly stopped, and darkness fell. A massive, nearly vertical wave struck their ship, worsening the situation. Larry and Herb worked tirelessly to pump out the water, but it was a daunting task.

Despite the challenges, the businessman and his family remained determined to survive. Even their injured daughter Suzzane showed incredible courage. They used a spare pump to control the water level. Realizing they couldn't sail to Australia, they aimed for two small islands to the east, a few hundred kilometers away. They had no radio signals to guide them.

On the morning of January 3rd, they finally managed to control the water levels with the pumps, although a significant leak remained. The weather worsened on January 4th, and by the morning of the 5th, it was even more challenging. Jonathan, the young son, bravely declared that he wasn't afraid as long as they were together. They had some beef and biscuits left and held onto hope, even though their compass was malfunctioning.

At 2 p.m., they calculated that they could find an island at 185 degrees to the southeast. They steered the ship in that direction. The narrator took a short nap, worried they had missed the island.
